  • The Alcuin Residency Program aims to raise up capable and mature leaders in the Hawaii Anglican Network on Oahu by equipping men and women for a life of service in the church and teaching in a network school.

As a young network still in formation, there are many opportunities in our ministries for training and equipping. The Alcuin Residency Program annually provides a particular vocational pairing of a church and school paid job. This integrates mentorship and training in a church, under the oversight of a rector, and work as an educator in a HAN school, under the oversight of a school director.

  • In the late 700s, Western Europe was experiencing a cultural and intellectual darkness. Yet in Charlemagne’s court a young scholar and deacon named Alcuin was quietly advancing a Classical Christian education. He brought the classical disciplines of the trivium and quadrivium and integrated this with Christian theology. The Palace School under his care grew as an educational center for both young clergy and scholars in a jovial and vibrant atmosphere. His community and friends at Charlemagne’s court became the foundation for the Carolingian Renaissance that later influenced the development of Western Civilization.

Our program seeks to embody the same vision for integrated life between church and education in the context of a joyful community. Like Alucin we want to bring together the richness of a Classical Christian tradition within school and church into a unique opportunity to grow and participate in the Hawaii Anglican Network.

  • The program will invite residents into liturgical and academic rhythms of life:

    In the parish church:

    • Work as a church intern

    • Attend all staff meetings

    • Attend parish council meetings

    • See the inner workings of pastoral life.

    • Having a Rector regularly oversee their growth, training, and provide mentoring and accountability.

    At a school:

    • 21 hours a week work at a school teaching middle or high school students

    • Training in the classroom by a school director

    • Opportunity to lead prayer services

    • Practicum as a classroom teacher for 7 classes

    • Learn basic organization and administration of academic classes

    • Pastoral opportunities to walk with teenagers as they academically and spiritually grow

    In the HAN:

    • A weekly meeting with one of the 7 clergy on Oahu

    • Possibility of taking in-person seminary classes at a small seminary start up on-island with informal ties to the HAN.

  • • Creating healthy habits of a life of prayer within the context of the church and school community

    • Enjoying the camaraderie and friendship of others in the community who love this integrated approach to work and worship

    • Having a community to walk alongside you as you discern your context for ministry

  • As a young network with many opportunities to serve and be a part of what God is doing the HAN, there is no single outcome the program aims at. Among the many possible long-term outcomes the program seeks to equip for may include:

    • Becoming a faithful lay leader serving on a parish council

    • Teaching at a school

    • Becoming a school board member

    • Becoming a future school administrator

    • Beginning the clergy discernment process with a local parish under the oversight of a rector to discern a calling to ordained ministry as a deacon, deaconess, or priest in the Anglican Church. (This is a process that would be started in conversation with a HAN rector, and is not formally part of the Alcuin Residency Program.)

    • Serving the local church as a music or choir director

  • • Must have a Bachelor’s degree

    • Have a desire to explore context for formal ministry in a church and/or school

    • Have a natural gift to teach in the classroom that can be developed

    • Have in interest in becoming confirmed in the Anglican Church if not already confirmed

    • Requirements specifically for the 2023 Residency:

    • Must have a background in Choral Music, be able to direct the SBH school K-12 choir.

    • Must be able to lead congregational singing on a piano or guitar.

    * Residency admissions will give preference to local candidates before candidates from the mainland to increase more local clergy and leaders in Hawaii

  • The following are the characteristics we hope will ensure that the resident will thrive in the program:

Profile of a Classical Teacher (taken from Josh Gibb’s article “Should I Pursue A Job In Classical Education?”)

    • Have a prejudice in favor of traditional things as opposed to novel and innovative things. This preference for old things should be manifested in how you spend your money, your evenings, and where you go to church.

    • Have a high regard for your church. Consciously or subconsciously, many teachers model their classrooms after the Sunday morning worship at their churches, which means your church should not be at odds, either aesthetically or intellectually, with classical ideals.

    • Be a straight shooter and not someone who insists on burying potentially offensive comments beneath a mountain of specious, obfuscating praise. A classical teacher is like a doctor who ought to be willing to tell his patient what needs to happen to be healed.

    • Have common sense about what is normal and natural. Teaching virtue requires an awful lot of common sense, a lot of proverbial wisdom, and an ability to judge what usually happens.

    • Have a desire to be honorable, and thus have a desire to teach because it is dignified and honorable work.

    • Have a love for students, and a sympathy for teenagers. Love is gladness at the very existence of another, and love is movement toward the beloved, which means that a classical educator should enjoy the company of teenagers.

Profile of an Anglican Music Director

    • Have a love both new and old music.

    • Have a love (or at least a strong interest) in learning to chant the Psalms.

    • Have a desire to see the whole congregation participating in the worship of God in music.

    • Have a background in the Kodály Approach (perhaps through something like the Chenaniah Summer Music Institute)

    • Have a background in directing a choir singing in parts

    • Have experience leading congregational music on the piano or guitar.

  • For the 2023-2024 School Year, The Alcuin Residency Program provides $26,110 for 10 months of work at SBH (21 hours-3 days per week), $12,500 that can be used toward health care, and $2,500 for 5 months (2 hours per week) of work starting January 2024. Total compensation package: $41,110.

Since this is a part-time job program, residents will have the opportunity to do other part-time work or school while in the program. Only working 4 days a week will allow residents to work another remote or local part time job, or take classes at a local seminary.

  • Each September there is an Annual HAN Conclave where the HAN schools and churches on Oahu share their ministry needs a year in advance.

The rector and school director who has identified a particular ministry need then work together to create a job description that fits part time work at both the school and church.

The rector and school director then posts a particular residency description to begin the following August.

The rector and school director jointly interview potential candidates and are responsible for recruiting for the residency program.

  • The Hawaii Anglican Network is a church planting network within the Diocese of the Rocky Mountains. We are currently a network of 2 churches, 2 classical collaborative schools, 2 missions, and 2 church plant initiatives.
